How to look like a professional safety trainer.

  • Your audience will only be as excited about the subject as you are. What you have to say is important and can help people stay safe and healthy. Be energetic and communicate your topic with enthusiasm.

  • Make a copy of the lesson plan for each crew member to take with them. Encourage them to take it home and share it with family and friends. Many more injuries happen outside of work than during it.

  • Bring in an example of something related to the lesson. A physical connection to your topic can enhance its impact.

  • Get your crew involved by having them read portions of the lesson. Be sure to select these people in advance and make sure they are comfortable reading in front of a group.

  • When asking questions, call on specific people. Mix it up so no one knows if it is their turn to answer a question. It helps people to remain attentive.

  • When asking for feedback, be positive and encouraging. Criticism will turn people off while positive comments will keep people engaged.

  • Read the training material in advance. Interject related questions or comments of your own to keep the presentation lively.

  • Remember to end the lesson with the focus on people, the hazards that surround them, and how they can address these hazards. This will set the stage for a safe workday.
